Summer Vacation

August 20, 2010

I just got back to work after six glorious (but non consecutive) days off.  We took two mini vacations in state and had some really good times.   The first was at a camp on Randall Pond in Parsonsfield near the NH border and the second was in the Pemaquid Point area.
For anyone reading this […]

Handplane Sessions

July 13, 2010

This weekend we had a pretty good sized swell come in from a deep low pressure system a little ways offshore.  I saw it coming and rushed production on a new handplane.  I still hadn’t tested the first one I made because I realized shortly after finishing it that the weight and thickness were all […]

Twenty Seven Hours Round Trip

June 28, 2010

I just got back from what, depending on how you look at it, could be seen as the most efficient or the most asinine road trip to NYC ever.  I left my house in South Portland at 4:00 AM Sunday morning and got back at 7:00 AM Monday morning.  The only sleep I got in […]

The Amazing Marriage License Race

March 16, 2010

My wife and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary last month.  The funny thing is, we had to go looking for our marriage certificate to find out exactly what day it was on.  I guess that’s just what happens when you elope.  When you have a more traditional wedding the date sticks in your mind […]

Sundance 2010

January 22, 2010

Frenzied reporters getting the scoop at Sundance 2010.  Gives a good impression of the festival atmosphere.
The Sundance Film Festival 2010 began yesterday.  That means it has been ten long years since I wandered the streets of Park City during that famed week where independent filmmakers from around the globe vie for their shot at super […]

Diesel 911

December 19, 2009

Earlier this week my heater fan quit working.  It was old and tired and that’s that.  So instead of putting on thermal underwear just to commute to work I drove my wife’s car this week while I waited for the part to arrive from Camden.
The timing couldn’t have been worse, because during the three days […]

Restorations and Repairs on a Budget

I’ve never been much of a car guy - never understood the appeal of one make over another or the allure of the newest models.  I agree that new cars smell nice, but no odor is worth that amount of depreciation.  I’ve always looked at cars in a utilitarian way.  A means of getting from […]

Hurricane Ida

November 20, 2009

Its Thursday and the minor surfing injury I sustained on Saturday is still making it hard to sit comfortably.  The effects of what had been Hurricane Ida reached Maine last weekend in the form of a very large swell and a 12 hour long downpour.  Some areas got over five inches of rain, but compared […]

Hitchhiker’s Guide II (Madras, OR to The Dalles)

May 22, 2008

Last night I watched Into the Wild. Sean Penn wrote and directed this movie which is based on the book of the same name by Jon Krakauer. I read the book several years ago, and in my opinion the movie falls seriously short. It was a good try, but nothing about the film […]

Price is Right

May 15, 2008

I was always a huge fan of the Price is Right when growing up. Still am. I think Drew Carrie is a great replacement for Bob. Of course no one can truly replace Bob Barker, but Drew has done a good job stepping in and making the show his own.
When I was […]
